LETTER TO WANDERER RE: REV. GOMAR DEPAUW (1967)

The Wanderer                                                                                               Helen Howell
St. Paul MN.                                                                                                 Rockford , IL.
                                                                                                                      Sept. 9, 1967

Gentleman:.

The attached copy of letter is quite self-explanatory, The scandal is that even in conservative ranks there is so little understanding of enemy tactics (though all have been victimized at one time or another); dissension, suspicion, division, all for the benefit of the opposition.

At least if you cannot support Fr. Gommar DePauw, you could refrain from quoting news sources that defame him. Was keenly disappointed when The Wanderer first withdrew its support of Father DePauw, more acutely felt again at The Forum when Mr. Walter Matt reiterated the original smear that his credentials were not sound, that more proof was I don't think so necessary.

The devil is always hopeful that we will waste our time in refuting his charges and to fail to recognize that astute adversary as the "brains" of all that is being perpetrated is only to fall victim to his snares.

There is only on force that routes Satan entirely, a love and zeal for truth, the strong armor of God that speaks out in defense of His Holy Truths without fear. Such defenders have always been stamped with the seal of truth that Satan gives it - his inextinguishable hatred and fury that brands one a fool and fanatic, a "rebel" (you name it)  But do you know something? We expect it and we glory in the cross, the effectiveness of such opposition that rouses Satan to such a fury.

As Catholics, we have truth that can never be changed to please anyone regardless of how much publicity they get, but how few really believe it in action or deed. Me, I don't think God believes we are worthy of His mercy. I think He is nauseated at the sight of such mediocrity, and because we didn't appreciate the truth for our salvation and the edification of others, He has given us just what most have wanted - Protestantism - which I, as a convert, had to reject in its entirety when I entered the Church. I know its husks and have no intention of bartering away the gift of Faith and the treasure I have known and loved. But there is only one language that fully expressed my feeling as a Roman Catholic, it was extolled in the superb letter written to the Holy Father by Father DePauw.

Sincerely in defense of Fr. DePauw,
Helen Howell
